I carve these little cardinals by hand from natural wood, using only eco-friendly acrylic paints.I choose solid, durable hardwood because I believe in making things that last—just like the memories they’re meant to carry.

I always loved the sentiment that cardinals appear when angels are near. While carving this, I made some mistakes by snapping the bark that frames the carving. At first, I planned on glueing it but I couldn't help thinking that the broken frame serves as a more important sentiment that without death, there cannot be life. The dead branch provides a place for moss and lichen to grow and makes room for new growth on the tree. In a time where too many are experiencing death and loss, I hope that all can find hope and see the light from the ones they love.

This little cardinal was hand-carved and hand-painted from a thin slab of basswood. Measuring 17 x 17 x 2 cm, it will look terrific hanging on the wall, or placed on a windowsill, shelf, or nightstand—wherever you'll see it every day. A gentle reminder of the ones you hold dear.
